…and how mantrailing can be a total game changer.
Working breeds were quite literally born to work. Whether it’s herding sheep, flushing birds, or guarding property, breeds like Spaniels, Collies, Malinois, and (my personal favourites!) German Shepherds thrive when they have a job to do.
When we bring them into our homes as pets without a purpose, they don’t just switch off those instincts. If we don’t give them a job, they’ll go self-employed, and that often means creating their own work… like barking at everything that moves, dismantling the sofa, or turning your garden into a crater field.
Working Minds Need Working Tasks
You could walk your dog for hours, but without engaging their brain, they’ll still have energy to burn. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise, especially for working breeds.
Challenging their brain can help reduce frustration, improve focus, and lead to a much more content, balanced dog.
It can also help prevent problem behaviours that often stem from boredom or unmet needs.
Why Mantrailing?
Dogs experience the world through their nose. Their sense of smell is thousands of times stronger than ours, and when they’re using it, they’re truly in their element.
Mantrailing is a type of scentwork where dogs learn to follow a specific person’s scent trail to locate them. It’s based on the work of professional search and rescue dogs, but adapted to be fun, low-pressure, and accessible for pet dogs of all ages and abilities.
It gives them a job to do – one that taps into their natural instincts and fulfils their need to work
It’s mentally enriching – using their nose exercises their brain in a way few other activities do
It boosts confidence – great for anxious or reactive dogs who need a win
It strengthens your bond – you’ll learn to work as a team and trust each other more
It’s low impact, high value – suitable even for dogs with physical limitations or older dogs needing lighter work
